The archaeological excavations

For 18 months, the Wallonia region and its Heritage department, parallel to the renovation works on the two town houses, were able to successfully carry out two archaeological excavations, some of the remnants of which are visible from the “La Cave” bar.

Cut flints (dated at between 90 and 130 thousand years old) were found under the Comtes de Méan town house, where the lobby is. Significant Medieval structures were also discovered on the intermediate terrace, probably the remains of fortications attributed to the Prince-Bishop of Liège, Notger (10th to 11th centuries).

On the bottom terrace, the remains of houses and alleys were discovered, leading the experts to conclude that there was a settlement in this place at the end of the Middle Ages (certainly from the 14th century on).
